I.Mission

To ensure that Columbia High School students become effective users of ideas and information by providing access to library media materials, supplementary materials, and instructional

equipment in all formats essential for academic success in all courses taught in Columbia High School.

 

II. Information for Students

A.           Hours of Operation: 7:45 to 3:45 on school days

             

B.           Number of checkouts allowed/Checkout period: Up to 3 books may be checked out for up to 2 weeks and may be renewed for another 2 weeks

C.           Overdue, Damaged and Lost Materials: There is a 10 cent per day charge for overdue books. All lost or damaged books must be paid for in full.

D.           Printing costs: 10 cents per page, black and white only

E.            Access to Library: Library is open to students before and after school or during the school day with a pass from their teacher.

F.            Other resources available

- Reading Bowl: Meets in the fall semester to prepare for the competition at the end of January.

- Accelerated Reader information: Please see the librarian.

- Accessing Destiny off campus: Destiny can be opened from the Media Center tab on the Columbia High School website

-Accessing Public Library Catalog: The DeKalb County Library website can be accessed on the Destiny Homepage.

- Library Assistants: see Ms. McComb to apply to work in the CHS Library

- Computer/Internet use in the library: Computers are available to students before and after school and during school with a pass from their teacher. Computers are for school work only.

III. Information for Teachers

A.   Instruction/Collaboration: Please see the librarian to arrange to bring your classes to the library for instruction.

B.   Class Visits/Scheduling: Class visits are scheduled on the Media Center Calendar on the Circulation Desk.

C.   Sending students: Students may come to the library with a teacher or with a pass from a teacher.

 

D.   CTSS contact information for hardware/software issues: Mr. Jerry White is our in-house technology consultant.

IV. Copyright Information

All teachers are required by the DeKalb County School Board to adhere to the Federal Copyright Law as it pertains to educational institutions. The Teacher-Librarian is the copyright resource person and conducts an in-service at the beginning of each school year. Questions concerning copyright issues should be brought to the Teacher-Librarian.

V. Video usage policy –

A.         Video recordings should be selected for the direct relevance to the approved curriculum and specifically relate to the instructional program.

B.        The showing of any video must be listed by the teacher in their weekly lesson plan, with the related learning goals identified, and the video’s Motion Picture Association of America’s Rating or the Producers Rating for district owned video recordings.       

             Movies with R ratings must receive approval of the Assistant Principal for Instruction and a parental permission slip must be signed.

D.        Movies may not be shown for reward or entertainment use only.

VI. Other Services offered by the Columbia High School Library Media Center Staff

A.           Set up of AV Equipment

B.           Train staff to set up and operate media center equipment

C.           Instruct staff in the use of resources and computer programs [Such as:  FirstClass, Discovery Education/video streaming, Destiny, GALILEO and other databases, word processing, PowerPoint]

D.           Assist staff and students with multimedia production and video editing

E.            Facilitate reading program such as Accelerated Reader and STAR testing

F.            Coach the Reading Bowl Team

G.           Provide readers’ advisory service to students and staff

H.           Provide bibliographic/work citation assistance (Such as printed guides and citation machines)

I.              Place materials on special reserve for classroom assignments

            Sign up on the Media Center Calendar after consulting with Mrs. Woods

IX.     MISC

A.    Laminating: Bring laminating to the Media Center after careful consideration of whether materials need to be preserved for a long time period.
